Stage 1 · 5 minutes — The Hook
Set the Scene
Read this out loud to the student.
“You are on a luxury cruise. Suddenly — the ship sinks!
You swim to a beautiful, deserted island. You are safe… but you can only bring 3 items from the ship with you.”
You swim to a beautiful, deserted island. You are safe… but you can only bring 3 items from the ship with you.”
“What do you think you need most to survive?”
“Have you ever been camping? What did you bring?”
“What is the hardest thing about being alone?”
Stage 2 · 10 minutes — The Task
Choose 3 items
The student must pick 3 and explain why for each one.
Waterproof matchbox
Large bottle of champagne
Giant fishing net
Acoustic guitar
Luxury 10-person tent
Satellite phone (5% battery)
“How to Survive in the Wild”
Sharp hunting knife
For each item ask: “Why did you choose that? How will you use it? What problem does it solve?”
Stage 2 — The Twist
Challenge their choices
Use these if they pick something too easily.
Fishing net: “But there are no fish in the lagoon. What will you do with it now?”
Guitar: “Interesting! How does that help you survive — or does it?”
Champagne: “Could you use that liquid for anything else? Think carefully…”
Satellite phone: “Only 5% battery. What is the ONE thing you would do with it?”
Stage 3 · 15 minutes — Deep Dive
Life on the Island
Ask these — then listen. Take notes quietly, don’t interrupt.
“What is the first thing you do when you wake up?”
“How do you find clean water each day?”
“How do you stay positive and not get bored?”
“If a rescue plane flies over, how will you get their attention?”
“Imagine it’s been one month. What has changed?”
Lower: “I want / I need / I will…”
Mid: First conditional
Upper: Second conditional
Stage 4 · 5 minutes — The Rescue
A boat arrives!
Room for the student — and only one item.
“A rescue boat appears on the horizon! They have room for you — but only one of your three items. The other two stay on the island forever.”
Which item do you keep as a souvenir? Why?
What is the first thing you eat in a city?
Who is the first person you call?
Would you write a book about this?
